Biographies
Gary Allread
Dr. Allread is the Program Director of SRI-Ergonomics at The Ohio State University. In this position, Gary works extensively with companies and organizations nationwide, to provide a variety of ergonomics technical support services. This includes: conducting ergonomics worksite assessments and guiding improvement efforts; training employee groups about ergonomics principles; and developing and helping to manage companies’ ergonomics initiatives. A Certified Professional Ergonomist, he has lent his expertise to a wide range of industry sectors, including hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing, automotive assembly, transportation, warehousing, all with the mission to improve work practices, reduce injuries, and improve productivity among employees. Gary also coordinates Ohio State’s popular Ergonomics Short Course, offered bi-annually, in both on-site and remote formats.
As a professional who works in both industrial and academic settings, Dr. Allread works closely with Ohio State’s ergonomics faculty and staff to translate research to useable formats for the benefit of industry. He has been a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society for 35 years and is currently President of the Applied Ergonomics Society (March 2022-March 2023.)
Chris Arlen

Sally Bloomfield
Sally Bloomfield—BPharm, PhD, HonFRSPH—is Chairperson of the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH). IFH works to raise awareness of the importance of hygiene in home and everyday life settings; developing and promoting hygiene practice based on scientific principles—which includes promoting understanding of issues such as the Hygiene Hypothesis and Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2013 she was awarded the Rudolf Schulke Foundation Medal for outstanding contributions to hygiene.
Sally was an Honorary Professor at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2003-2019) and, Senior Lecturer at Kings College London (1972-1997). She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. She has published over 120 papers on infection prevention, hygiene and antimicrobial agents.
Cassandra Contreras
Cass Contreras is a Leader and Executive Consultant who works with Janitorial and Sanitation Supply Companies, Building Service Contractors and Educational organizations. Cass specializes in recruiting, training, new business development, and major market expansion. After spending more than two decades in sales and leadership for multimillion dollar organizations, Cass knows that spending time listening to what her clients’ needs are and gaining understanding of their business goals and initiatives is what is required to help provide solutions, so her clients achieve the success they seek. Cass is passionate about green cleaning and the environment and has been a
LEED A.P. since 2007.
Cass has consistently motivated and led teammates to achieve their highest potential and was awarded Home Depot Pro Sales Leader of the Year in 2018!
Cass has over 20 years’ experience working in sales, supply chain, distribution and in technology sales as well. She has won multiple awards for sales excellence include Home Depot’s Circle of Excellence six years in a row. In her capacity as a LEED Accredited Professional, she has assisted on over 20 projects including the LEED for Existing Buildings Platinum Aventine project in La Jolla, CA.
Cass holds a BA in Psychology from San Jose State University.
Mary Denney
Mary Denney is the Environmental Services Manager for Pacific Lutheran University located just outside of Tacoma, Washington. She manages a Team of 38 individuals who together maintain both Custodial and Waste Diversion operations for the PLU campus. She has been with PLU for almost 14 years and manager of the Department for about 5.5 years. Prior to that, she was with a Commercial Cleaning company starting as a custodian and working up to a Lead position. Since becoming the Manager, she has become very involved in ISSA, IEHA and the Cleaning Management Institute. She has earned her Custodial Supervisor and Train the Trainer Certifications and has achieved her goal to have her entire custodial Team become Certified Custodial Technicians through CMI.
Charles P. Gerba
Charles P. Gerba Ph.D. – Professor of Environmental Microbiology, University of Arizona.
Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized environmental microbiologist and Professor of Environmental Microbiology in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, and Soil, Water and Environmental Science, at the University of Arizona. His credentials include a B.A. in Microbiology, Arizona State University, 1969, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology, University of Miami, Florida, 1973. He is also a member of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Dr. Gerba has authored more than over 700 articles – 16 on coronaviruses as of January, 2022 – and on behalf of the Departments of Environmental Science (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences), Biosystems Engineering (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences), and Community and Environmental Health (College of Public Health) at the University of Arizona.
His efforts are largely focused on quantifying the benefits of interventions such as disinfection and cleaning for reducing risk of infection.
His articles include several text books in environmental microbiology and pollution science. He actively conducts research on the development of new disinfectants and drinking water treatment processes, new methods for the detection of pathogens, and microbial risk assessment. He was a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Committee on the development of the “Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers,” which forms the basis for testing the performance of water treatment devices used for outdoor recreation. He is a member of the U.S. EPA’s Science Advisory Board Committees on Drinking
Water and Research Strategies.
The public knows Dr. Gerba best for his crusading on behalf of household hygiene. He has made frequent media appearances, including Good Morning America, Today, and Dateline, and has been quoted numerous times in international and national reports, magazines and newspapers.
Jeffrey C. May
Jeffrey C. May, M.A., CMC (Certified Microbial Consultant), CIAQP (Certified Indoor Air Quality Professional), and Principal Scientist at May Indoor Air Investigations, LLC.
A former educator (Adjunct Faculty, Department of Work Environment, U MA Lowell, Jeff is a building consultant and indoor air quality (IAQ) investigator who over the last 25 years has conducted thousands of investigations of homes, schools, and offices. He has personally examined by microscopy over 40,000 air and dust samples, and has served as an expert witness in cases involving mold and moisture issues.
May has lectured nationally about indoor air quality including at the Harvard School of Public Health, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), American Lung Association (ALA), American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), American Chemical Society (ACS), and Allergy and Asthma Foundation of American (AAFA).
He is also widely published in dozens of articles on indoor air quality and in over six books, and is author of a monthly column in Healthy Indoors magazine and of five more books on IAQ published by Johns Hopkins University Press:

Jeff is a member of a number of professional organizations including The American Chemical Society, The Indoor Air Quality Association, and the New England Chapter of the Industrial Hygiene Association. He is a former national Board Member of the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America and is currently on the Board of the Massachusetts Association for the Chemically Injured (MACI) and the Chemical Sensitivity Foundation (CSF). He holds a B.A. from Columbia College (chemistry) and an M.A. from Harvard (organic chemistry).
Mark McDaniel
Mark McDaniel is a Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Director of the Center for Integrative Research in Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE). He received his Ph.D. from University of Colorado in 1980. His research is in the general area of human learning and memory, with an emphasis on prospective memory, encoding and retrieval processes in memory and applications to educational contexts. His educationally relevant research includes a series of studies on elaborative study techniques, learning of science categories, and enhancing learning through testing (repeated retrieval), with much of this latter work being conducted in college and middle school classrooms. His research has been sponsored by the Institute of Educational Sciences, the James S. McDonnell Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.
McDaniel has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition and as president of the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association and of Division 3 (Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science) of the American Psychological Association. He has published over 300 journal articles, book chapters, and edited books on human learning and memory, and is the co-author with Peter Brown and Henry Roediger of the book: Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning (Harvard University Press, 2014).
Allen Rathey
Allen Rathey is a cleaning professional turned educator. He started a cleaning service back in the 80s then sold it after discovering that written communication was his gift, and the cleaning industry could benefit from having spokespersons who could dignify the work through writing about the benefits and science of cleaning as removal of unhealthy substances. As of February 2022, his work has been cited in eight research papers at Academia.edu — He is past president/owner of The Housekeeping Channel, The Healthy House Institute, The Healthy Facilities Institute (HFI) and HFI-U specializing in e-learning. He founded the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN), has served as an educational liaison for IEHA, and is Director of the Indoor Health Council.
Henry L. (Roddy) Roediger
Henry L. (Roddy) Roediger, III is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. He graduated with a BA in Psychology from Washington & Lee University (1969) and received his PhD from Yale University (1973) in cognitive psychology. He previously taught at Purdue University, the University of Toronto, and Rice University. Roediger’s research has centered on human learning and memory, and he has published over 350 articles and chapters on various aspects of remembering. He also co-authored four books and has co-edited ten more. Roediger served as President of the Association of Psychological Science, the Society of Experimental Psychology, the Psychonomic Society and several other associations of psychologists. He was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and honorary doctorates from Purdue University and Southern Illinois University. Roediger has also received the Howard Crosby Warren Medal from the Society of Experimental Psychologists, the John P. McGovern Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the William James Fellow Award from the Association of Psychological Science, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science, and the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.
Perry Shimanoff
Perry Shimanoff is a Certified Master Custodial Trainer with ISSA’s Cleaning Management Institute (CMI). He is the founder and president of MC2 Management and Communication Consultants, and has been involved in training both managers and front-line cleaning staff for more than 40 years. He has designed several computer applications for maintenance management, facility scheduling, and custodial operations; has served on the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN) Board of Directors; and is a current member of both ICAN and the IICRC standards committee. He has conducted more than 300 training seminars at more than 800 school districts, taught nearly 20,000 custodians nationally, written more than 90 articles requested by journals, and is a successful author.
Philip Tierno, Jr.
Dr. Philip M. Tierno, Jr. is a well-known microbiologist with more than 40 years of experience in the field of Clinical and Medical Microbiology. He was the Director of Clinical Microbiology and Diagnostic Immunology at Tisch Hospital, New York University Langone Medical Center, and is currently Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at the New York University School of Medicine and also at the NYU College of Dentistry. He is a member of numerous respected scientific societies and did his graduate studies at the New York University, where he was awarded a M.S. degree in 1974 and his Ph.D. in 1977 under the mentorship in Microbiology of Dr Guenther Stotzky.
Dr. Tierno has acted as a consultant to the office of Attorney General of the New York State, the Department of Health of the City of New York, the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, and the College of American Pathologists. Dr. Tierno was a member of the NYC’s Task force on Bioterrorism & currently is a member of the NYC Medical Reserve Corps. Dr. Tierno has been recognized extensively for his numerous contributions to the medical / scientific community. In 1986, he was bestowed the honor of Knighthood by The Sovereign Military and Hospitaler Order of Saint John Jerusalem, Knight of Malta for his work on Toxic Shock Syndrome. Since 1977 to the present, he has been recognized as a biographee in consecutive editions to date of “Who’s Who in America; Who’s Who in the World; and Who’s Who in Science and Medicine” for his work in the field of Microbiology. In 2005 he was awarded the Il Leone de San Marco Award for lifetime achievement in Science & Medicine.
Dr. Tierno is Co-founder and President of the “Foundation for Scientific Research in the Public Interest” (a non-profit organization) whose primary objective is to fund scientific research for the public welfare and for which the usual and traditional sources of support are unavailable or encumbered, and he served as Chairman of the Environmental Commission of Norwood, New Jersey for 15 years. Dr. Tierno is the U.S. representative to the Global Hygiene Council headquartered in London. His broad expertise in the area of the environmental and medical microbiology and microbial ecology has resulted in numerous appearances on TV news, documentary, and investigative reports. He has appeared on both local, network and cable television shows such as 20/20, Oprah, Montel, Primetime, Dateline, Nightline, Today, Good Morning America, Tyra Banks, Dr. Oz, Nate Burkas, CNN, Katie, Chris Cuomo CNN, etc, etc.
Bob Woellner
Bob has more than twenty-five years of industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, scientific investigative, environmental risk assessment, and environmental management systems consulting experience.
He is Founder and President of QUEST Management International.
Bob lectures and publishes extensively, including his co-authored book International Environmental Risk Management: ISO 14000 and the Systems Approach. He has qualified and served in numerous jurisdictions as an expert in industrial hygiene, environmental monitoring, microflora/mold, meth, indoor air quality, environmental sampling, and risk management, for dozens of environmental contamination cases. Bob has a Bachelor’s degree in geology from Middlebury College and a Master of Science degree in Marine Geology and Geophysics from the Rosensteil School of Marine & Atmospheric Science.
Gene Woodard
Gene Woodard retired from the University of Washington where he served as Director of the Building Services Department (BSD), which oversees Custodial Services and UW Recycling. The UW was one of the first higher education institutions to use Integrated Cleaning and Measurement (ICM) to validate cleaning procedures within its facility. BSD was recognized by American School and University magazine and the Healthy Schools Campaign for the Grand Green Cleaning Award in 2007 and 2014, as well as the Co-Grand award in 2010. Gene is a Master Registered Executive Housekeeper (MREH) and a former member of the International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA). Gene served as President of the IEHA from 2000-2002. He has participated in various committees with the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA), and APPA: Leadership in Educational Facilities. He currently serves on the Healthy Green Schools & Colleges Steering Committee in an ex-officio capacity. He is a speaker and writer on custodial and leadership topics. Gene served on the Advisory Board for Facility Cleaning Decisions magazine and was also a contributing writer for Executive Housekeeping Today and currently for Facility Cleaning Decisions magazine. He received the University of Washington David B. Thorud Leadership Award in 2020 and a University of Washington Husky Green award in 2017. He also received the William D. Joyner Achievement Award from IEHA in 2012. Gene recently retired on November 1,2021 and looks forward to staying active in the cleaning industry.
