An Exercise in Professionalism: How Clean is Clean?

Published On: November 8, 2023Categories: All Posts

The purpose of this exercise is to develop a method or methodologies to enable cleaning professionals to determine a level of cleanliness by objective measurement. The criteria include:

  • Realistically define the study area to be cleaned, plus the cleaning strategy and evaluative criteria for objective measurement of cleanliness.
  • Observe and define conditions, including that of the general environment including surfaces, lighting, accessibility, and time of observation, as well as administrative directives such as adherence to established policies and procedures. These observations can be placed on a matrix for comparison and assignment of percentages of compliance.
  • Develop observational techniques with the use of simple test methods to provide uniform and repeatable data.
  • Develop easy to develop and analyze sampling methods and strategies to eliminate bias in the use of instrumentation, including ATP monitoring.
  • Incorporate Integrated Cleaning and Measurement (ICM) for comparing cleaning techniques, methods, equipment, and chemicals to get optimum efficiency and economy from the cleaning program.
  • Develop simplified training templates for supervisors and supervisory personnel.
  • Develop simplified recordkeeping to show trends and highlight areas for improvement.
  • Do all of this in language that is easily understandable (8th grade level).
