We exhale carbon dioxide (CO2) when we breathe, and monitoring CO2 in classrooms can be a way to help ensure enough ventilation to reduce exposure to COVID-19 which is mainly spread through the air.

Cambridge and Surrey Universities, and Imperial College, London, have supported a rollout of CO2 monitors in the UK.

Dr. Henry Burridge of Imperial College said: “CO2 monitors allow teachers to assess the ventilation in their classrooms for the first time. Monitoring air quality is especially important during colder months when ventilation is typically lower due to colder outdoor temperatures, causing COVID-19 and other airborne diseases like flu and the common cold to linger and spread more easily.”
